Mombasa's media outlets are being called upon to play a crucial role in educating residents about the workings of small claims courts and e-Justice services. These specialized commercial courts cater to disputes involving smaller amounts (below one million shillings) that would otherwise clog up traditional courts and delay justice.
Small claims courts simplify the entire litigation process, offering online filing, cost-effectiveness, and speedy resolutions within 60 days. At a recent sensitization program held by Sisters for Justice, advocate Judy Philip stressed the media's importance in demonstrating the user-friendly nature of these courts.

"Many community members are unaware of these accessible courts and their streamlined mechanisms," she noted.
In line with the Small Claims Courts Act of 2016, the Judiciary has established and operationalized these dedicated courts. Recognizing their potential, several non-governmental and civil society organizations, including Sisters for Justice, are actively promoting their use.
Sisters for Justice Director, Naila Abdallah, emphasizes the need for community education on these courts. "Civil society and community-based organizations often encounter cases that could be efficiently resolved through the small claims court system," she explains.
Abdallah believes raising awareness of these judicial services can empower communities to utilize them for faster and more accessible dispute resolution. Sisters for Justice, a Mombasa-based organization, champions justice and empowerment for women and children.
With their user-friendly procedures and streamlined timelines, small claims courts and e-Justice services offer a promising avenue for quicker and more accessible justice in Mombasa. The media's active role in raising awareness can significantly empower residents to navigate these simplified legal mechanisms and seek timely resolutions to their disputes.
