Mombasa public beaches reopen as county urges vigilance following weather advisory

The Mombasa County Government announced that public beaches are now accessible once more and construction projects may resume immediately.

Public beaches in Mombasa have been reopened following a two-day closure prompted by a marine weather alert, as the county government confirmed improved ocean conditions on Tuesday.

The temporary shutdown came after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued an advisory warning of strong winds and turbulent seas, prompting Mombasa authorities to halt all beach access, suspend marine-related activities, and pause ongoing construction works near the coast as a precautionary measure.

The Mombasa County Government announced that public beaches are now accessible once more and construction projects may resume immediately.

“I hereby lift the earlier restrictions; public beaches are now open for public access and recreational use, and construction activities may resume across Mombasa County effective immediately,” Governor Abdullswamad Sherriff Nassir.

However, maritime operators venturing into deeper waters are advised to proceed with caution due to the possibility of moderate offshore swells.

“We are now in receipt of an updated review from the County Director of Meteorological Services indicating a significant reduction in wind speeds to a maximum of 16 knots, and a gradual decline in wave heights, based on revised models and direct observation,” stated the county boss.

Residents and visitors were commended for their patience and cooperation during the temporary closure, which county officials said was key in ensuring public safety.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Kilifi County has warned of rough ocean conditions expected on Thursday and Friday this week..

According to the Kilifi Department of Special Programs and Disaster Management, winds reaching up to 15.5 metres per second could cause hazardous sea states.

“All users of small vessels are strongly advised to avoid venturing into the ocean during this period to prevent accidents and loss of life. Please prioritise your safety and that of others,” read the Kilifi advisory.
