Ousted Mombasa Majority Leader Mwamiri accuses assembly of weaponising power

Former Mombasa County Assembly Majority Leader Athman Rama Mwamiri has denounced his removal from office, accusing a section of the Assembly’s leadership of using political power for personal gain.
Mwamiri described the move as a blatant weaponisation of power and vowed to resist what he termed political coercion. “I am being punished for only speaking my mind freely. For daring to have an independent thought. For refusing to be a puppet,” he said.

His ouster was announced by Speaker Aharub Khatri during the Assembly’s afternoon sitting on Tuesday, August 5 2025, citing Standing Orders 15(3), 15(4) and 15(5).
The Speaker stated that the decision followed a resolution by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members in July endorsing Ganjoni MCA Prischilla Mumba as his replacement.
However, Mwamiri disputed the legality of the process, claiming ODM had formally assured him in writing that the status quo would be maintained and that he had not been served with any formal complaint, Hansard record or official correspondence regarding his removal.
He also questioned the validity of the elections referenced by the Speaker, noting that the date in question coincided with a public function hosting the Deputy President in Likoni.
Calling for strict adherence to due process, he warned, “I can live without this position, but I will not stand by while the Assembly is turned into a theatre of manipulation. We owe the people of Mombasa better.”
Mwamiri’s remarks came just hours after a group of ODM MCAs, led by Old Town MCA Abdirahman Hussein Anza Fresh, rejected interference from the party’s headquarters in Nairobi over Assembly leadership matters.
The legislators urged the central leadership to instead prioritise strengthening ODM’s grassroots presence in the county.
