Mombasa youth leaders demand talks with county on jobs, gender inclusion and entrepreneurship
In a letter to the chief officer of the Department of Youth, Gender and Sports, the group requested a meeting to discuss issues including employment, entrepreneurship, gender inclusion, and the use of sports to foster social cohesion.
Youth leaders from all six sub-counties of Mombasa are calling for immediate talks with the county administration to tackle challenges affecting young people.
In a formal letter to the Chief Officer of the Department of Youth, Gender and Sports, the group requested a meeting to discuss issues including employment, entrepreneurship, gender inclusion, and the use of sports to foster social cohesion.

“We are calling for open dialogue with the county government on issues that continue to hinder the progress of young people. Our focus is on job creation, skills development, and ensuring youth voices are part of decision-making processes.”
The leaders also stressed the importance of gender mainstreaming in youth programmes, urging the county to ensure women and vulnerable young people are not left behind.
Technology was highlighted as a key driver for expanding opportunities. The group noted that with proper investment in innovation and digital tools, more young people could benefit from emerging economic prospects.
According to the youth representatives, the proposed meeting would serve as a platform for exploring practical strategies to empower the county’s youthful population.
“We believe stronger collaboration with the Department of Youth, Gender and Sports will help unlock the full potential of Mombasa’s youth,” the letter added.
The youth leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the county through community engagement, entrepreneurship support, and advocacy initiatives aimed at transforming the socio-economic future of the coastal region.
