A Kilifi court has sentenced a man to serve five years imprisonment for being in possession of 40 kilogrammes of wildlife trophies of an endangered species valued at Sh4 million.
The accused, Mtengo Kazungu Bahero was arrested and charged with two counts of dealing in wildlife trophies of endangered species without a permit contrary to Section 92(4) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013 and being in possession of wildlife trophies of an endangered species contrary to Section 92(2) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013.

Chief Magistrate Julius Nangea on Monday found that the prosecution, through Principal Prosecution Counsel Winnie Atieno Otieno, had proved the case against him in one count.
The court, however, acquitted him for the offence of dealing in wildlife trophies of endangered species, namely 17 pieces of elephant tusks weighing 40 kilogrammes with a street value of Sh4 million.
The same court also sentenced Stephen Karisa Ngumbao and Emmanuel Zege Baya to pay a fine of Sh5 million in default two years imprisonment and two years imprisonment respectively, for dealing in wildlife trophies namely three elephant tusks weighing five kilogrammes with a street value of Sh500,000.
They were also charged with being in possession of the trophies with a street value of Sh500,000 without a permit, contrary to Section 95 of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013.
Baya had been previously convicted and sentenced to serve seven years for dealing in wildlife trophies.
