Cholera outbreak in Lamu County claims two lives, affects 50 others

Health officials in Lamu County have reported a cholera outbreak that has resulted in two deaths and affected 50 residents.

The outbreak has primarily impacted Witu Ward, with fatalities recorded in Witu Town and Kipini. Authorities are working to contain the spread and provide medical assistance to those affected.

Health Promotion Officer Muhsin Mohamed stated the health department is working tirelessly to manage the situation and prevent further spread.

“Residents are urged to maintain high hygiene standards and promptly report any cholera cases or symptoms to the nearest health centre to prevent further spread of the disease,” Muhsin said.

He emphasized the importance of using safe water and proper food storage to combat the outbreak.

"We encourage all Lamu residents to ensure that the water they use is safe as well as to store food well to avoid contamination," Muhsin said.

He added that more than 50 people have been confirmed to be affected by the disease in Witu Ward alone.

Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, typically found in water or food contaminated by faeces from a person infected with the disease. It spreads rapidly in areas with inadequate sanitation and unsafe drinking water, making it a significant concern for Lamu County's residents.

To prevent the spread of cholera, residents should ensure water safety by boiling or treating it with chlorine or other disinfectants. Using safe water for cooking and washing is also crucial.

Maintaining hygiene by washing hands thoroughly with soap and safe water, especially before handling food and after using the toilet, can significantly reduce the risk of infection. Proper food storage in clean, covered containers helps prevent contamination, while proper waste disposal methods, such as using latrines, are essential to prevent the spread of the bacterium.

Reporting symptoms such as severe diarrhoea and vomiting immediately is vital for early treatment, which can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness and death.

“Health authorities are on high alert, continuously monitoring the situation and providing support to affected areas to contain the outbreak and prevent further cases.”

The Lamu County Health Department has urged all residents to remain vigilant and adhere to the recommended preventive measures.

Community health workers are being deployed to educate residents on the importance of hygiene and proper sanitation practices.
