Mixed reactions in Kilifi over Joho joining Cabinet as Aisha Jumwa is snubbed

Joho is also set to take over the Mining docket from Salim Mvurya, the former Kwale governor who was transferred to Trade, previously held by Moses Kuria.

After his appointment he thanked Ruto saying, "It is with great humility and profound appreciation that I accept my nomination by President William Ruto for the position of Cabinet Secretary of Mining ,Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs. I extend my sincere gratitude to the Almighty Allah (SWT) for this opportunity to once again serve the great people of Kenya in a different capacity."

"Upon confirmation, I look forward to working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the Blue Economy, Mining and Maritime sectors take a leading role in the socio-economic transformation of our nation."

Supporters of Joho celebrated the appointment, stating that he was poised to lead the region famed for fisheries and mining. George Chiriba, a local, praised Joho's selection, saying, “Joho’s appointment is a significant and positive step forward for our country. His extensive experience as a leader in Mombasa will undoubtedly contribute to the effective management of the Mining and Blue Economy docket. We believe his leadership will help drive meaningful progress.”

Mercy Kaingu further expressed her excitement about Joho's new role, highlighting his impressive track record as governor. She conveyed her belief that his proven capability and commitment to development would translate into effective leadership in his new position.

Kennedy Odila also shared a similar view, noting that Joho has consistently worked towards the betterment of the region. He saw Joho's appointment as a well-deserved acknowledgement of his efforts and expressed hope that his expertise would be beneficial to the entire nation.

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro also publicly congratulated Joho, expressing confidence in his new role.

“I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to my dear brother HE Hassan Ali Joho on his nomination as CS for Mining and Blue Economy by HE the President William Samoei Ruto,” Mung’aro wrote on X.

Locals such as Bilali Hamisi, Goldina Jilani, and Juma Mwaringa voiced their discontent.

Hamisi criticised the decision, expressing that Aisha Jumwa had been a dedicated supporter of Ruto, putting in significant effort to support his campaign. He felt that her exclusion from the cabinet was a betrayal of her loyalty and hard work and that she deserved recognition for her commitment.

Goldina Jilani added, “It is disheartening to see Jumwa overlooked, especially considering the crucial role she played in rallying support for Ruto. We had hoped her contributions would be rewarded with a cabinet position.”

Mwaringa warned of potential repercussions, indicating that if Jumwa was not included in the cabinet, supporters might need to reconsider supporting the UDA party. He pointed out that her support had been crucial for Ruto’s success in Kilifi and that ignoring her now could provoke a significant backlash.

After her dismissal, former CS Aisha Jumwa reacted by appreciating the opportunity she was granted to serve Kenya at such a senior level.

"I am glad that I got the chance to serve Kenyans. Thank you, Mr. President, and I wish you well," she said.
