Tourism stakeholders in Kilifi County diversify offerings to revitalise sector

Tourism stakeholders in Kilifi County are working to revitalise the local tourism sector, which has declined in popularity since a decade ago.

To attract both local and foreign guests, they are expanding their services to include music concerts and comedy acts at hotels and public parks.

Historically, Kilifi's hospitality business has seen variable peak and off-peak seasons, and with international tourism declining, stakeholders are focussing on innovation. They are incorporating cultural, entertainment, and sporting events into their attractions to increase their attractiveness.

Local artists and comedians are presented to showcase regional traditions through music and dance, while comedians from Nairobi are invited to lure larger crowds.

"The music festival comes at the right time as we are opening the season in Kilifi County," said Noni Mbugus, a tourism player from Watamu.

She noted, "Our county boasts amazing tourist destinations, and using music to promote the region is perfect. Malindi offers rich coastal history, Watamu boasts beautiful beaches, and Kilifi provides attractions like skydiving and golf at Vipingo."

"We are bringing in something new, exciting, and captivating, something that connects you to the heart and soul of this county," said entertainer Otieno Wakake.

Comedian Kelvin Aswani added, "To all visitors, welcome to Kilifi, and especially to Malindi. Let's sail together and explore this beautiful region."

Titus Kangangi, Director of Saffron Gardens, highlighted a crucial infrastructure issue. "The extension of the runway at Malindi International Airport is essential. Despite having an international airport, no international airline can land there," he said.

Kangangi noted that the new initiatives are a sure bet to attract more visitors and ensure that hotels are booked all year round.

The Malindi District Cultural Association (MADCA), represented by Stanley Kiraga, announced plans to showcase and market the Mijikenda culture to visitors.

“Kilifi, renowned for its stunning beaches and game parks, is set to see a revival in its tourism sector through these innovative efforts. We hope that by diversifying the products, we can enhance the visitor experience and boost the county's economy. As the region prepares for the upcoming season, the blend of culture, entertainment, and natural beauty promises to make Kilifi a top tourist destination once again,” he said.
