Include, consider, support local talents - Kilifi youths to county government

Youths in Kilifi County have called on the county government to recognise and support various artistic talents in the region, similar to the way it promotes sports such as football.

Through the Department of Sports and Talent, the county government has been urged to extend its recognition to talents beyond the sports field.

According to Esther Aloo, an actress, the government has consistently acknowledged only sports talents, neglecting those involved in music and acting.

Aloo pointed out that artists in the county lack designated spaces to practice, which has posed a challenge in showcasing their abilities.

She emphasised the need for the county government to identify and support young talents in music and acting, enabling them to grow and sustain themselves.

Tashi Abdala, a youth from Malindi, voiced concerns about the lack of inclusivity for young artists.

“The main challenge we face as youths in Malindi is the lack of inclusivity. The county government often brings in performers from other regions, leaving us without a platform to showcase our talents,” said Abdala.

He added that the youth in Malindi are “literally crying” for the opportunity to be included and recognised.

Cultural norms were also highlighted as a significant barrier by Zeinab Zahor, another youth.

“Sometimes our customs restrict us, especially young girls, from stepping out to explore and showcase our talents. I urge parents to give their children the chance to shine,” she stated.

Mwaringa Maye, a young artist, echoed these sentiments, stressing that art can provide financial benefits and job opportunities for the youth.

“Art can build your life, help you financially, or even create employment. As youths, we should be given a chance to show what we can do,” he said.

Justin Baraka, another youth, lamented the lack of support for art in the region.

“Art is essential in addressing various issues in our lives, but here, it has been left behind. It’s a natural talent given by God, and it deserves to be nurtured and paid for,” he asserted.

The youths are calling on the county government to consider the broader scope of talents and provide the necessary support and platforms for them to thrive.
