Second Shakahola massacre suspect dies in custody

Munyambo's death comes after that of Mary Charo Mbita, another accused, who died earlier while in custody at the Coast Teaching and Referral Hospital.

A second suspect in the Shakahola massacre case, Edison Safari Munyambo, also known as Baba Sifa, has died while undergoing treatment at a Mombasa hospital.

Munyambo passed away after a short illness. His death comes after that of Mary Charo Mbita, another accused person who also died while in custody at the Coast Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Munyambo and Mbita were among 95 individuals facing 283 charges of manslaughter in connection with the Shakahola massacre.

The suspects, including the alleged mastermind Paul Mackenzie, are being tried before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku.

They are also accused of other serious crimes, such as child torture and cruelty, violating the Basic Education Act, terrorism, radicalisation, membership of a terrorist organisation, and murder.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Jami Yamina informed Ithuku of Munyambo’s death, indicating that the trial should proceed while awaiting the official confirmation of death.

Yamina added that once the court receives the necessary documents, the case against Munyambo would be marked as abated, closing the prosecution against him.
