Governor Godhana links Tana River clashes to boundary disputes, resource strains

Governor Godhana stressed that the clashes reveal deeper issues that national and county governments have failed to address over the years.
Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana has attributed recent intercommunal conflicts to unresolved issues over administrative boundaries and resource allocation among local communities.
He argued these factors, long neglected, have contributed to significant losses in both life and property.

Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday, Governor Godhana stressed that the clashes reveal deeper issues that national and county governments have failed to address over the years.
In addition to disputes over boundaries and resources, he noted that politically backed migrant communities have settled in the county, intensifying existing tensions.
“The challenges facing Tana River are multifaceted. The recent clashes have uncovered boundary conflicts both with neighbouring counties and within sub-counties, as well as issues in resource management. The national government must address these matters to prevent further violence,” Godhana said.
In response to the unrest, the regional security and intelligence team, led by Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha, established a presence in Tana River following violence that erupted two weeks ago in Anole village in Bangale Sub-County and Nanighi village in Tana North, with Matagala village suffering the worst impact.
The violence resulted in the deaths of 18 people and injuries to several others.
Governor Godhana called on the national government to swiftly resolve boundary issues with full community engagement to promote peaceful coexistence.
“Clear and definitive boundary demarcations, from the ward to sub-county level, would play a crucial role in curbing the sporadic interclan and intercommunal conflicts,” he added.
The governor also noted that leaders from affected counties, particularly Kitui and Tana River, have met with relevant authorities to work towards resolving boundary disputes and promoting harmony in the region.
Following the clashes, Godhana was summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi for questioning. Investigations into the violence are ongoing.
