Eastleigh South residents welcome construction of long-awaited Mvuma Nyuki road

For years, residents and businesses along this stretch have complained about poor road conditions, which have disrupted movement and caused environmental and economic challenges.
Residents of Eastleigh South ward have welcomed the ongoing construction of Mvuma Nyuki road, describing it as a long-awaited development that will ease movement and improve living conditions in the area.
The project, which has already started, has seen the removal of the upper surface of the road to create a level ground before the laying of stones. According to engineers working on the site, this process is part of the preparation before the road is finally tarmacked.

Mvuma Nyuki road begins at 17th Street, passes through Mwende, then connects to 18th Street before extending towards Ole Sinoni and finally ends at 19th Street near Zawadi Primary School.
For years, residents and businesses along this stretch have complained about poor road conditions, which have disrupted movement and caused environmental and economic challenges.
Speaking to The Eastleigh Voice, residents said the construction is a welcome move as the community had suffered from the poor state of the road for a long time.
The area has, in recent years, developed into a busy business hub with hundreds of enterprises, including wholesale shops, restaurants, general stores, hospitals, and other service outlets. In addition, several high-rise residential buildings have been constructed, turning the ward into a densely populated neighbourhood.
James Gingo, a long-time resident, said the road had for years been a source of hardship for traders and residents due to the dust and poor drainage.
“The dust from this road has been affecting businesses, especially shops that sell clothes and other goods. Once the road is tarmacked, we will also have a proper drainage system, which has been a big challenge for us,” he said.
For others, the main problem was mud during rainy seasons.
Sharif Adan, who lives in one of the nearby apartment buildings, recalled the struggles faced by residents whenever it rained.
“Accessing our homes was very difficult because of the mud that formed on the road. Sometimes it was even hard to leave the building. I am happy to see this construction because it will finally end those problems,” he explained.
Ibrahim Maina, another resident, welcomed the news that drainage will be constructed alongside the road. He noted that stagnant water had been a constant problem.
“Whenever it rained, water would collect on the road, and this affected small businesses. Hopefully, the drainage system will end that challenge and movement will become much easier,” he said.
Bodaboda riders, who depend on the road daily for their livelihoods, also praised the project. They noted that the tarmacking of Mvuma Nyuki will make transport more efficient, safer, and less costly in terms of motorcycle repairs. Small business owners along the road echoed the same view, saying the road’s improvement would boost customer access to their shops.
Several youths in the ward expressed their satisfaction not only with the promise of a better road but also with the fact that the construction has created job opportunities for them.
The road is one of several projects being undertaken in the Kamukunji constituency in recent months. Roads such as Ahero in Pumwani ward, Keroe in California ward, and the extension of 18th Street in Eastleigh South have already been completed.
Currently, construction is also ongoing on Seventh Street in Airbase ward in addition to Mvuma Nyuki in Eastleigh South.
Residents said they look forward to the completion of the project, which they believe will mark a new chapter in the growth and development of their neighbourhood.
