Traditional herbs and spices hold a revered spot in cultures worldwide, offering a bridge between ancient wisdom and contemporary wellness. While modern medicine often takes the spotlight, the timeless benefits and deep-rooted knowledge of herbs like Densii, Moringa, and many more continue to provide value.
In Eastleigh, a vibrant neighbourhood in Nairobi, the air is filled with inviting aromas of spices and herbs. Behind landmarks like Yare Plaza, the scent of traditional remedies, including Densii, permeates the atmosphere.
Densii is a prominent herb in traditional medicine, particularly valued among Somalis.
Sadam Ali, a spice and herb vendor in Eastleigh for over five years, has established himself as a prominent figure in the local spice and herb trade.
His shop, located near Yare Plaza, attracts a diverse clientele with a range of needs. While many customers visit for culinary spices, others seek herbs like Densii. Notably, Densii is highly valued for its antibiotic properties.
“Densii is widely used as an antibiotic. It’s available in different forms; dried and crushed. Some people apply it directly to wounds because it helps them dry out.”
He notes that while most of the herbs and spices they offer are imported from countries like India and Ethiopia, Densii is locally sourced from the eastern part of Kenya.
Sadam also sells Moringa leaves which he claims are another favourite among his customers. Moringa is valued for its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels, making it a beneficial addition to diabetes management.
“We cater to a broad range of customers, including those who place orders and those who visit us directly,” says Sadam whose shop attracts a clientele that appreciates the authenticity and quality of the products offered.
The spices are procured from various regions around the world, including Tanzania, Ethiopia, India, and Somalia, to meet the high demand among Kenyan consumers.
He emphasises that Moringa is quite popular among those who know its benefits. “Moringa is especially sought after because it helps with managing blood pressure and regulating sugar levels,” Mohammed explains.
According to Mohammed, increasing awareness about the health benefits of these herbs is helping more people make informed choices about their health and wellness.
Sadiya Adan, a resident, has a deep appreciation for the spices and herbs. “I especially value Densii because it helps in reducing body fat. I use the powdered form mixed into tea, which also aids in alleviating bloating and other stomach issues.”
Densii can be prepared with hot water or added to tea, depending on one's preference.
Beyond Densii, Sadiya also holds Ubani in high regard. Its pleasant aroma enhances the ambience of her home, and she appreciates its additional health benefits.
For Sadiya, these herbs are much more than just remedies; they are a vital part of maintaining her health and preserving her cultural heritage.
Mohammed Ali, another seasoned spice and herb vendor in Eastleigh, says many of his customers aren’t fully aware of the benefits of the herbs and spices he offers. “However, those who do understand their value tend to visit us regularly.”
The herbs and spices are sold in various quantities, ranging from less than a kilogram to several kilograms, based on customer needs. Prices vary between Sh100 and Sh600 per kilogram, depending on the type of herb.
