The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has identified the man and the maid involved in the attack as Ugandan nationals.
Residents of Eastleigh, Nairobi, were left shaken on Friday when CCTV footage emerged showing a man violently attacking a 20-year-old woman in her home.
The video shows a man, armed with a hammer and accompanied by a maid, strangling and assaulting the woman in a sixth-floor apartment in the Ushirika area of Starehe Sub-county.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has identified the man and the maid involved in the attack as Ugandan nationals. According to the DCI, the maid, known only as Evelyn, was in her third week of employment with the family and reportedly facilitated the man’s entry into the home. Following the incident, she fled and remains at large.
In addition to the physical assault, the suspects allegedly stole valuable items, including gold jewellery, cash in both Kenyan shillings and US dollars and four family-owned laptops.
The DCI confirmed these details in a statement posted on their social media accounts, describing the extent of the victim's injuries.
"The young woman sustained serious injuries, including a broken tooth and injuries to her hand, head, and legs. Additionally, she exhibited signs of having been whipped, with visible marks on her back," read part of the statement.
A video of the incident, seen by Eastleigh Voice, shows bloodstains on the floor.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention and was later discharged into the care of relatives in Tassia Estate.
The DCI reported that the family’s primary tenant, a Somali man, was not at home during the incident. He was reportedly out with his children, while his wife was undergoing medical treatment in India.
This incident comes just weeks after a tragic series of attacks that claimed the lives of three Somali women in Nairobi. Following those murders, the DCI arrested a man identified as Hashim, suspected to be connected to the killings.
The latest attack has heightened concerns within the Somali community in Nairobi, particularly in Eastleigh, as fears rise over the recent surge in violence. The DCI has committed to continuing its investigations to uncover the full scope of the incident and locate the suspects involved in Hakima's assault.
