Anti-Counterfeit Authority seizes over 2,500 fake calculators targeting candidates

Authorities from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) have seized 2,996 fake scientific calculators worth Sh8 million at a mall in Nairobi’s CBD.

The authority warned that the counterfeit devices could mislead students preparing for national exams and jeopardise their results and academic futures.

One suspect has been apprehended and is assisting in investigations.

The devices, designed to mimic a leading brand, were reportedly intended for sale to students ahead of the national exams.

ACA Nairobi Regional Manager Abdi Abikar cautioned that counterfeit calculators often malfunction or display incorrect functions, putting learners at a disadvantage in timed subjects like mathematics and physics.

“We are intensifying enforcement. Criminals will face the full force of the law.”

Experts warn counterfeiter devices malfunction or display incorrect functions, costing students their exam scores and future opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is reinforcing integrity as it prepares for the 2025 national examinations, scheduled to run from October 21 to November 21.

TSC has issued strict guidelines for Centre Managers, Supervisors, and Invigilators to ensure credible and transparent assessments.

Acting Commission Secretary and CEO E.J. Mitei said only qualified and registered teachers will manage the exams, and nominees must demonstrate high integrity and be free from conflicts of interest.

All exam personnel must register on the CP2 system, avoid serving in schools where they have recently worked, and declare any vested interests to ensure transparency.

Centre Managers will verify credentials, track attendance daily, and submit records to the Kenya National Examinations Council to guarantee accountability.

KCSE candidates will begin rehearsals on October 17, while exams run from October 21 to November 21. Rehearsals for junior and primary assessments take place in late October, with the exams following shortly after.
