24-hour command centre activated to combat fake KCSE exam leaks

The centre, based at the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, brings together personnel from the security agencies, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of ICT, and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

The government has intensified efforts to stop the spread of fake KCSE exam materials circulating online by activating a 24-hour National Command Centre to track, identify and arrest fraudsters exploiting digital platforms.

Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the multi-agency centre is now fully operational and working in coordination with security teams across the country to maintain the integrity of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, which begin next week.

The centre, based at the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, brings together personnel from the security agencies, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of ICT, and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

It operates around the clock to monitor social media activities and respond instantly to any suspicious online activity.

“The centre allows us to access and assess information in real time, and where there are gaps, we immediately intervene. So, our officers are monitoring various social media platforms to identify and neutralise individuals seeking to defraud parents, teachers, or candidates with fake exam leaks,” the PS said on Wednesday.

He said the government has detected attempts by fraudsters posing as exam insiders who demand money from unsuspecting parents and teachers under the pretence of selling leaked papers.

“We have known that in previous years, there have been challenges of early exposure. The Command Centre is coordinating all efforts to ensure that anyone involved is apprehended and prosecuted without delay,” Omollo added.

Speaking in Starehe Sub-County, Nairobi, after opening a KPSEA and KJSEA examination container, PS Omollo assured that sufficient measures have been put in place to guarantee the safety and credibility of all ongoing and upcoming national examinations.

He emphasised that security agencies at both the national and grassroots levels are working closely with KNEC to ensure that all exams are conducted fairly and without interference.

“We are already supporting the ongoing KJSEA and KPSEA examinations that began across the country on Monday. We shall sustain the same vigilance as KCSE candidates begin their papers next week,” said the PS.

Omollo also noted that the Command Centre will coordinate the safe delivery of exam materials in areas affected by logistical difficulties due to the ongoing short rains season.

He affirmed that no student will be disadvantaged, as all examination centres will receive papers on time.

The PS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the credibility of the education system and ensuring that candidates sit their exams without disruptions caused by misinformation or criminal networks.
