TSC announces recruitment of 9,159 teachers nationwide

The new appointments will be permanent and pensionable, covering primary, junior, and secondary school levels across the country.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a fresh recruitment drive to fill 9,159 teaching positions left vacant due to retirements, resignations, and deaths in public schools.

The new appointments will be permanent and pensionable, covering primary, junior, and secondary school levels across the country.

In an advert seen by The Eastleigh Voice, 7,065 positions are for primary schools, 12 for junior schools, and 2,082 for secondary schools.

The Commission has instructed all qualified applicants to submit their applications online through the TSC website or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke by midnight on December 8, 2025. Detailed information about vacancies by county and school is available on the commission’s portal.

This recruitment follows previous hiring rounds to replace teachers lost through natural attrition.

Last December, 8,707 positions were advertised, and earlier reports indicated that 8,018 teachers had left the profession between June 2022 and January 2023.

In May 2025, 2,014 positions became available, and estimates suggested that over 10,000 teachers could leave the payroll in June, prompting urgent action to maintain learning continuity.

The Commission emphasised that the exercise aims to stabilise public school learning, which has been affected by the ongoing teacher shortage.

Former TSC CEO Nancy Macharia highlighted the growing crisis, saying, “Junior and senior schools faced a deficit of 98,261 teachers. The gap could widen with the rollout of senior schools in 2026, further straining implementation of the curriculum. We have over 300,000 trained unemployed teachers in our register. The biggest issue for us is the budget. Currently, we only receive Sh1 billion, which can recruit just 6,000 teachers.”

In addition to permanent hires, the TSC plans to recruit 24,000 intern teachers in January 2026 to support learning, particularly in areas where staffing shortages are most severe.

Contracts for the current cohort of 20,000 interns are set to expire in December, raising concerns about potential disruption in schools.

However, the plan to hire interns has faced criticism from teachers’ unions, who argue that the exercise may not be legally supported.

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens, hold a minimum P1 certificate for primary teaching or a diploma in education for junior and secondary schools, and be registered with the TSC.

The Commission cautions that applications must be submitted online, with no manual forms accepted. Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously worked for the TSC, and successful candidates may be posted anywhere in the country.

The Commission has also warned applicants about fraudsters attempting to exploit job seekers.

Suspected fraudulent activity should be reported to the nearest TSC office, police station, or via official TSC contact lines and email. The commission reiterated that the recruitment process is entirely free of charge.
