Abdi Aden Hassan, a senior teacher at the school, said they received the tragic news when the two bodies were retrieved on Saturday after a frantic search that took several hours.

A Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam candidate is among two girls killed in Elwak, Somalia that borders the Kenyan town of Elwak in Mandera county.

Faiza Abdirahman Bishar, 13, who sat for her KCPE examination last week at the Elkala Primary School located four kilometres East of Elwak town, and her childhood friend Bishara Abdirahman Abdi, 14, were identified as the girls who died on Friday at the flooded dam as rains continue to pound the area.

Abdi Aden Hassan, a senior teacher at the school, said they received the tragic news when the two bodies were retrieved on Saturday after a frantic search that took several hours.

Abdi said the news came as a shock to the community. He said they had anticipated that Faiza would be among the top candidates from the region based on her previous impressive performance at school.

He said the deceased was a humble and disciplined girl and everyone at the school as well as her parents were all struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

Elsewhere, a Form Two student is also reported to have drowned and his body retrieved at the Yahud Dam on the outskirts of Wajir town.

Northern Kenya is currently grappling with the devastating impacts of heavy rainfall, with Elwak town experiencing the worst downpour, leading to widespread flooding and the displacement of hundreds of residents.

As the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of the torrential rains, communities, and authorities remain on high alert, working towards ensuring the safety and well-being of all those affected.
