Governor Erick Mutai breaks silence after surviving impeachment

The recent impeachment bid was initiated on August 15, 2025, after 33 of the 47 Kericho MCAs voted in support of the motion, surpassing the constitutional threshold.
Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has broken his silence after surviving a second impeachment motion at the Senate in Nairobi on Friday, August 29, 2025.
The motion, which accused Mutai of misconduct, misuse of public resources, unlawful staff dismissals, and authorising questionable payments, was dismissed by senators who upheld his objections, effectively bringing the proceedings to an end in his favour.

Speaking shortly after the outcome, Mutai expressed gratitude to his legal team and county assembly members who supported him, while calling for unity among county leaders for the benefit of the public.
"I am not perfect, I have my flaws. But God is a God of second chances - and today, the devil has been put to shame," said Mutai.
"I also want to thank my legal team, led by Katwa Kigen; without them, this would be very difficult. They have not slept together with our staff from Kericho County, and they made this happen. I want to thank the 18 Members of Assembly from Kericho County who stood solidly with me; they made their voices heard. God has vindicated us."
This marked the second time Mutai has weathered an impeachment storm. In October 2024, the first attempt failed after his lawyers argued that the motion lacked the constitutionally required two-thirds majority.
Only 31 assembly members supported the motion, short of the 32 required, prompting the Senate to dismiss the case on procedural grounds.
The recent impeachment bid was initiated on August 15, 2025, after 33 of the 47 Kericho MCAs voted in support of the motion, surpassing the constitutional threshold.
Mutai’s legal team immediately challenged the credibility of the County Assembly’s electronic voting system.
Several MCAs appearing before the Senate claimed they had not cast votes for the impeachment and were never trained to use the digital platform, raising concerns over the accuracy of the tally.
Friday night’s outcome was therefore a vindication for Mutai, allowing him to remain in office and call for stronger collaboration among county leaders to serve the people of Kericho.
