IJM condemns killing of 17-year-old girl in Kilifi, calls for justice and action against femicide

IJM termed her death a painful reminder of the persistent and deadly threat of violence against women and children in Kenya, particularly in vulnerable communities.

International Justice Mission (IJM) Kenya has strongly condemned the killing of 17-year-old Farida Kadzo Changawa last Friday evening in Madina, Kijipwa, Kilifi County, calling it the latest disturbing case of femicide in the country.

The organisation termed her death a painful reminder of the persistent and deadly threat of violence against women and children in Kenya, particularly in vulnerable communities.

"This case is not about a 'love triangle,' as some early media reports have suggested. It is about power, control, and the systemic failure to protect survivors of violence. Farida's story reflects the harsh reality that many girls and women face—where poverty, gender inequality, and weak enforcement of laws create a deadly environment for survivors," IJM Senior Manager Aggrey Juma said.

Juma spoke during a press briefing at the Muhuri Legal Aid Centre in Mombasa, where he was flanked by Farida's mum, grandmother and aunt.

The victim was reportedly stabbed after refusing to accompany her boyfriend to a family event and succumbed to her injuries shortly after returning home.

The matter was immediately reported to the police, and investigations are ongoing.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday and arraigned in court, where police sought 10 days to probe the case before pressing charges.

A post-mortem on the body of the deceased is yet to be conducted.

Juma, who also condoled with the family and community for the loss, then called for the speedy delivery of justice to victims of violence against women and children in Mombasa and elsewhere across the country.

He confirmed that Farida, who had previously survived a defilement case and was receiving support through the justice system.

"IJM also calls on the public to stand in solidarity with survivors and demand accountability and systemic change. Farida's life mattered. Her story must not end in silence. Let this tragedy be a turning point in the fight against femicide and all forms of violence against women and children," he urged.
