Turkana farmers in Loima to benefit from Sh39.5 million irrigation project

Farmers in Loima, Turkana South, are set to benefit from a Sh39.5 million irrigation project funded by USAID STAWI in partnership with the county government.

The project includes the construction of two canal linings, a water conveyor system, and a storage facility, all aimed at boosting food security in Turkana South Sub-County.

SolarGen has been contracted to oversee the project's implementation.

Speaking during the project's handover ceremony, County Director of Agriculture Aron Nanok emphasised the importance of collaboration between the contractor and the leadership of the Integrated Water Users Association (IWUA) to ensure timely completion.

“The lining of the canal will reduce water loss through seepage, enabling maximum delivery of water for crop production,” Nanok said.

 

Job Kitetu, an official from USAID STAWI, confirmed that the project is scheduled to be completed within 56 days. He also stressed the importance of quality work by the contractor to ensure long-term benefits for the community.

A six-member contract management committee was constituted to work closely with the contractor and ensure the project's timely delivery.

The handover event was attended by several officials from the county government, USAID STAWI, and community representatives, marking a key step towards improving food security in the region.
