FKFPL: Sharks and Bidco share spoils, Police edge Mara Sugar in Awendo

Sunday's FKF Premier League action saw Kariobangi Sharks and Bidco United settle for a 1-1 draw, while Kenya Police edged Mara Sugar with a crucial late winner in Awendo. Elsewhere, Gor Mahia and Kakamega Homeboyz shared spoils in a barren draw, Bandari held off City Stars, and Shabana stunned Sofapaka on the road.

The weekend action in the Kenyan Premier League wrapped up on Sunday, January 26, with teams battling for crucial points as the season heats up. Kariobangi Sharks aimed to end their winless streak against Bidco United, while Kakamega Homeboyz hosted Gor Mahia in a closely contested encounter. Elsewhere, Bandari FC faced Nairobi City Stars, Sofapaka took on Shabana FC, and Kenya Police visited Mara Sugar in Awendo.

Kariobangi Sharks 1-1 Bidco United

Kariobangi Sharks and Bidco United continued their rivalry that dates back to their first encounter in December 2020, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Both teams entered Sunday’s match in dire need of a win, having failed to secure victory in their last five matches.

Sharks took an early lead through Andreas Odhiambo in the first half, raising hopes of a turnaround. However, Bidco’s Jacob Onyango equalised in the 81st minute, ensuring the game ended in a stalemate. The draw sees Sharks move to 13th position with 20 points, level with Mathare United but ahead on goal difference. Bidco remains rooted to the bottom of the table with 16 points.

Kenya Police 1-0 Mara Sugar

Kenya Police edged Mara Sugar 1-0 in a tense match at Awendo Stadium. After a goalless first half, Clinton Kinanga struck in the second half to secure three points for the visitors. The victory marks Police’s fifth consecutive win, maintaining their momentum in the title race. The law enforcers remain in contention to dethrone Tusker FC from the top of the table.

Kakamega Homeboyz 0-0 Gor Mahia

Kakamega Homeboyz and Gor Mahia played out a goalless draw at the Mumias Complex. Homeboyz’ Moses Shuma appeared to give his side the lead, but his effort was disallowed for offside, much to the frustration of the home fans.

“We scored a clean goal. I can’t say it was offside because my striker was onside and attacked the ball. However, I appreciate Gor Mahia; they gave us a challenge,” said Homeboyz coach Francis Baraza.

Gor Mahia’s coach Zedekiah Zico Otieno expressed satisfaction with the draw, citing the tough playing conditions. “One point away from home on a difficult pitch is good enough. We defended well and will look forward to the next game,” he said.

Bandari FC 1-0 Nairobi City Stars

Bandari FC claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nairobi City Stars, thanks to Benja Nyamawi’s early strike. Bandari’s resolute defence ensured they held onto their slim lead until the final whistle. The win boosts Bandari’s confidence ahead of their next match against Sofapaka. Meanwhile, City Stars, under coach Salim Babu, continue to struggle with back-to-back losses. They will aim to bounce back against Bidco United in their upcoming fixture.

Shabana FC 1-0 Sofapaka

Shabana FC secured a crucial 1-0 win over Sofapaka, handing their opponents a second consecutive defeat. Ezekiel Omuri’s goal proved decisive as Shabana took all three points on the road. Shabana will face Posta Rangers next, while Sofapaka will seek redemption against Bandari FC.
