Gor Mahia held as Bandari and Tusker stumble

By |

Despite dropping points, Gor Mahia's lead at the helm of the FKFPL log was extended to eight points more than second-placed Tusker who lost to Kariobangi Sharks

Gor Mahia will have to wait longer for their next league victory Kakamega Homeboyz held them to a barren draw in a match that was played at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Saturday 6th April.

The 20-time league champions are now winless in two consecutive league matches with today’s draw adding to their 1-0 loss away to Bandari in Round 24.

To the K’Ogalo’s relief though, Bandari and Tusker losing to Ulinzi Stars and Kariobangi Sharks saw their lead at the top of the table increased to eight points. Gor Mahia now lead the standing with 51 points as Tusker and Bandari follow on 43 points with the ale men ranked higher on goal difference. On their part, Kakamega Homeboyz remain 7th with 38 points.

Tusker, who played Kariobangi Sharks in a 1 pm kick off at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos, saw their four-match winning streak halted with a 3-2 loss to Kariobangi Sharks. Red-hot John Makwata scored twice and Julius Masaba bagged the winner for Kariobangi Sharks as they stretched their unbeaten run to five matches. Makwata gave Sharks the lead in the 22nd minute but Dennis Oguta drew the brewers level in the 45th minute. Second resumed with two teams tied at 1-1 but Makwata changed the score in Sharks favour in the 56th minute before Tusker equalized again through Deogratius Ojok in the 72nd minute. However, Tusker had no response when Julius Masaba helped Sharks regain their lead in the 79th minute. The victory saw Kariobangi Sharks rise to 12th with 30 points and most certainly take a huge step in safeguarding top flight status.

Ulinzi Stars 1-0 Bandari

At the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Ibrahim Shambi gave Ulinzi Stars a reminder of what victory tastes like as his 30th minute goal proved enough for the soldiers to overcome Bandari. Ulinzi Stars had been winless in five consecutive league matches. The win over the dockers saw them rise to 13th with 29 points but it may mean little in projecting their future performance as the soldiers have blown hot and cold this season.

Posta Rangers 3-0 Shabana

In Homa Bay, Posta Rangers endured yet another miserable afternoon in the FKFPL as a 3-0 loss to Shabana condemned them to a third consecutive league defeat as their hosts ended a five-match losing streak which had formed the tail of the a seven-match winless run.

Shabana led 2-0 at halftime with goals from former Gor Mahia midfielder Lloyd Khavuchi (22nd minute) and Mathew Tegisi (42nd minute). Brian Michira completed the rout in the 47th minute to give the Glamour Boys their fifth win of the season and one that inspires hope of the club surviving relegation as they remain 17th with 21 points, four more than bottom-placed Nzoia Sugar and four less than 16th-placed Muhoroni Youth. Posta Rangers on the other hand remain 5th with 39 points.

Muhoroni Youth maintained their four-point advantage over Shabana with a 2-0 win home victory over Nairobi City Stars whom they had not won against since 2021. Muhoroni Youth scored through Jackson Green who gave them the lead from a penalty in the 27th minute and Styve Bulugu who sealed the win with a goal in the 89th minute. The defeat did not do too much damage to Nairobi City Stars’ position on the log as they remain 6th with 39 points.
