Benni McCarthy still winless as Harambee Stars fire blanks in Chad draw

Kenya's search for a breakthrough under new head coach Benni McCarthy continues after a goalless draw against Chad in Saturday's friendly match in Morocco, despite dominating proceedings.

Harambee Stars were left frustrated after a goalless draw against Chad in an international friendly match played on Saturday evening at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

Despite dominating most of the game and creating several scoring chances, Kenya could not find the back of the net. The result means head coach Benni McCarthy is still searching for his first win in charge of the national team.

Kenya started brightly, with Moses Shumah and Boniface Muchiri combining well in attack. Shumah missed two early chances, one flying over the bar and another saved by Chad’s goalkeeper Jourdain Mbaynassem. William Lenkupae also had a lively game but could not convert his opportunities, including a one-on-one chance in the second half.

Referee Bouchra Karboubi twice waved away Kenya’s penalty appeals after Lenkupae went down in the box and was fouled just outside the area. Muchiri was a constant threat on the left, setting up Adam Wilson and Lenkupae, but the finishing was lacking.

Chad offered little going forward but nearly stole the lead through Casimir Ninga and Ali Mahamat Adam, who came close in both halves. Brian Bwire stood firm in goal for Kenya to keep the game level.

McCarthy made several second-half changes, including bringing on Austine Odhiambo, Ben Stanley, Emmanuel Osoro, and James Kinyanjui, but the goal continued to elude Kenya.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday, June 10th, at the same venue as Kenya continues its preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place in August.
