Kenya’s Ismael Athuman joins Spanish side Zamora CF on one-year deal

Kenya international Ismael Athuman has signed a one-year deal with Spanish third-tier side Zamora CF, marking a fresh chapter in his career following his January exit from AD Mérida. The experienced defender joins on a free transfer, with the club banking on his versatility and leadership ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Kenya International Ismael Athuman Gonzalez has completed a move to Spanish third-division side, Zamora CF, signing a one-year deal with the team following his January departure from AD Mérida

Ismael, who has had spells with multiple Spanish clubs throughout his career, has joined the club on a free transfer. His arrival was officially confirmed via a statement on the club's website, seen by The Eastleigh Voice.

"Zamora CF announces the signing of center back Ismael Said Athuman González from AD Mérida, where he played in the second division play-offs this past 2024-25 season. Athuman brings experience and solidity to the center of the red-and-white defense for the 2025-26 season," the statement reads.

Before signing for Mérida in January 2025, Ismael had been without a club since leaving Águilas in mid-2024. Despite the setback, Ismael made 17 appearances for Mérida when he joined the team, contributing solid performances that caught the eye of Zamora's scouting department.

"He has logged over 1,800 minutes in the First Division between Mérida and Sabadell. He has also played for Cacereño, Fuenlabrada, Granada B, and Águilas," said Zamora.

Having represented Kenya at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Athuman is no stranger to the international stage. Although primarily deployed as a central defender at club level, he has featured as a defensive midfielder and right back for the Harambee Stars.

"A full international player with Kenya, he developed through the UD Las Palmas youth system and made his first-team debut in the Second Division, making a total of six appearances during the 2020-21 season," Zamora said.

Zamora are hopeful his versatility and leadership will be an asset as they push for promotion this season.

"He enjoyed a remarkable moment in the 2021-22 campaign, helping Real Murcia advance to the First Division. Welcome to Zamora CF, Ismael!" the club said.

With the 2025-26 campaign fast approaching, Ismael will be looking to impress in Zamora colours.
