Kwale side SS Assad among teams through to FKF Cup quarters
SS Assad from Kwale and Compel from Webuye are the only second-tier teams that have qualified for the FKF Cup quarterfinals
60 remains the magic number for AFC Leopards as Kayci Odhiambo’s 60th minute goal in Ingwe’s 1-0 win over Shabana saw the 10-time FKF Cup champions qualify for the 2024 FKF Cup quarterfinals and, hence remain on course to mark their 60th anniversary with silverware.
AFC Leopards now meet Compel FC who defeated Mara Sugar 2-0 in Kisumu. Compel, who play in the FKF Division One Zone B league, eliminated the NSL side courtesy of goals from Philip Simiyu (39th minute) and Dominic Likwiro (79th minute).
The Kwale-derby match between FKF NSL side SS Assad and FKF Coast Regional League club Denmak which was played at the Ukunda Showground was a fight to the death that saw SS Assad progress to the quarterfinals winning 5-4 on post-match penalties. The match was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation with Denmak initially looking set to repeat their Round of 32 heroics when they eliminated FKF PL side Gor Mahia after Mwinyi Chibato gave them the lead in the 15th minute. However, Chiwaya Muruche saved the home the blushes after equalizing for them in the 80th minute to set up a penalty shootout that went the way of the FKF NSL club.
SS Assad will now have to negotiate past Kariobangi Sharks to reach the semifinal after the 2018 FKF Champions eliminated Ulinzi Stars following a 2-1 victory in the Round of 16 tie played at the Police Sacco Stadium. Kariobangi Sharks came from behind to claim the win after Issa Lumumba had given the Soldiers the lead in the second minute. Kariobangi Sharks then replied through Fortune Omoto in the 38th minute before John Makwata sealed the win with an 83rd minute goal.
The FKF Cup quarterfinal matches are scheduled to be played on the weekend of 27/28 April and the full fixtures are as follows:
