African football legends play tribute match for Marrakech earthquake victims, Kenya's Arap Uria present

The tribute match was not exclusive to male football stars, as notable women's football figures, including Gaelle Enganamouit, Alberta Sackey, and Perpetua Nkwocha, also participated.

In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, renowned football legends from across Africa came together with their Moroccan counterparts for a special exhibition match dedicated to the victims of the tragic earthquake that struck Marrakech in September 2023.

The event, held on Sunday, December 10, 2023, in the venue that will host tonight's CAF Awards. not only paid homage to those who lost their lives but also demonstrated the power of unity in the face of adversity.

The Legends, a mix of former African Players of the Year and iconic figures, shared the pitch with over 100 children from Marrakech and its surrounding areas, along with several football officials. The line-up featured esteemed names such as El Hadji Diouf, Samuel Eto’o, Emmanuel Adebayor, Pascal Feindouno, Abedi Pele, and many more representing nations across the continent.

Kenyan content creator Arap Uria, renowned for his exceptional football commentator impressions, graced the occasion alongside former football stars Adebayor, Salomon Kalou and Siphiwe Tshabalala. Uria shared glimpses of the memorable encounter through a series of photos, capturing moments of camaraderie with the esteemed ex-football players.

The tribute match was not exclusive to male football stars, as notable women's football figures, including Gaelle Enganamouit, Alberta Sackey, and Perpetua Nkwocha, also participated.

"We are one Africa, and when one country hurts, we come together to show support. We are truly sorry for their loss," said El Hadji Diouf, a two-time African Player of the Year as seen on CAF Online.

Former Togo captain Emmanuel Sheyi Adebayor emphasised the importance of being present for the people of Marrakech.

"It is very important that we are here for the people of Marrakech and for them to know that we are with them in this," said the ex-Arsenal and Manchester City man.

The players were visibly moved by the presence of young fans in the stadium.

"Seeing the young children of Marrakech in the stands meant so much to us. When I was young, my parents supported me in every way possible, so I felt their pain and hope that they went away inspired that we are with them," Adebayor said.

Gaelle Enganamouit, the 2015 Africa Women’s Player of the Year, highlighted the impact of football as a powerful platform to convey messages of love and support saying, "Football is very powerful. It is a platform that we can use to pass on this very strong message."

The event concluded with selfies taken with the young fans, creating an atmosphere of hope and trust. Patrick Mboma, a Cameroonian football icon, delivered a moving tribute, emphasizing the importance of football as a tool for solidarity and support.
