The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) has taken action to prevent the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) from publishing its final list of delegates for the upcoming elections. This decision comes after a petition filed by Geophrey Mudembei, the Vice Chair of the FKF Kakamega Branch.
Mudembei’s petition, submitted on October 9, 2024, raises serious concerns about the delegate nomination process. He has named the FKF Electoral Board, the Appeals Committee, and the General Secretary as respondents in the case. The Cabinet Secretary for Sports and the Sports Registrar are also involved as interested parties.
The SDT, led by member Mrs. Njeri Onyango, reviewed the case and deemed it urgent. As a result, they issued a temporary order to halt the publication of the delegate list until the matter is resolved. The FKF has been instructed to provide Mudembei with all necessary documents by October 11, 2024.
A mention of the case is scheduled for October 22, 2024, where the Tribunal will give further directions. This legal challenge has raised questions about the transparency of the election process within the FKF, as the delegate list is critical for voting in the elections.
As the situation develops, stakeholders in Kenyan football will be watching closely to see how this will impact the upcoming elections. The FKF has yet to release a statement regarding the Tribunal’s order.
