UDA summons two nominated MCAs over links to Gachagua's party

UDA summons two nominated MCAs over links to Gachagua's party

According to the summons, UDA says both leaders wore branded merchandise of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) during a political event on May 15, and also attended its rally on May 24.

The United Democratic Alliance has summoned two nominated Members of the County Assembly over claims that they took part in the political activities of a rival party, in what the party describes as gross misconduct and a breach of its constitution.

Nyeri Nominated MCA Ann Thumbi and her Nairobi counterpart Joy Muthoni Mwangi are expected to appear before the UDA disciplinary committee on June 20 at Hustler Plaza in Nairobi.

In separate letters, both signed by the Committee's chairperson, Charles Njenga, the two are accused of openly supporting the Democracy for Citizens Party during public events and on social media.

According to the summons, UDA says both leaders wore branded merchandise of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) during a political event on May 15, and also attended its rally on May 24.

DCP is a newly launched party which has former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as its leader.

“Evidence shows your active association with and participation in that event, particulars whereof being well within your knowledge, including but not limited to wearing branded merchandise for the said party,” the party told both MCAs in separate letters.

UDA also claims that Thumbi went further by endorsing DCP publicly and encouraging people to leave UDA.

“Your attendance at a DCP public rally on May 24, 2025, where you endorsed and encouraged members of the public to join that party and leave the UDA party,” the committee said, amounts to incitement of party members to defect.

For Muthoni, who is a nominated MCA in Nairobi, UDA pointed to a message posted on her Facebook page that allegedly encouraged support for DCP and called on UDA members to shift allegiance.

“Your message carried on your Facebook page clearly and by implication demonstrated your association and support of the said DCP party and encouraged members to leave the UDA party,” reads her summons.

The party warned that the actions by the two MCAs violate section 14A of the Political Parties Act, which provides that a person shall be deemed to have resigned from a political party if they publicly support or promote another.

UDA also cited multiple sections of its own constitution which prohibit members from promoting the ideologies or interests of other parties.

The disciplinary committee stated that the conduct of the two MCAs amounts to disloyalty and breach of the party code of conduct.

“Your actions outlined above amount to incitement of party members to leave the UDA party and total disregard of the party constitution, rules and code of conduct,” read the letters.

Both MCAs are required to appear in person or through legal representation.

UDA said that if found liable, the disciplinary committee may impose sanctions including suspension, expulsion, or fines, and forward the outcome to the National Executive Committee for further action.
