UK, France, Canada threaten sanctions against Israel over Gaza war

The three countries criticised Israel's ongoing military operations in Gaza, describing the level of human suffering as intolerable.

The United Kingdom, France and Canada have threatened to institute sanctions against Israel if it does not immediately halt all advances into Gaza and allow critical humanitarian aid and supplies into the region.

In a joint statement on Monday, the three countries criticised Israel's ongoing military operations in Gaza, describing the level of human suffering as intolerable.

"We strongly oppose the expansion of Israel's military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable," the statement, seen by The Eastleigh Voice, reads in part.

"We call on the Israeli Government to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. This must include engaging with the UN to ensure a return to the delivery of aid in line with humanitarian principles.

At the same time, the three nations stated that Israel's decision to allow only a basic amount of food into Gaza was insufficient to address the dire needs on the ground.

"The Israeli Government's denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks breaching International Humanitarian Law," the statement reads.

The trio of nations condemned recent remarks by Israeli officials advocating for continued military operations in Gaza to force Palestinians to flee the region.

"We condemn the abhorrent language used recently by members of the Israeli Government, threatening that, in their despair at the destruction of Gaza, civilians will start to relocate," they said.

"Permanent forced displacement is a breach of international humanitarian law."

While reaffirming their support for Israel's right to defend its sovereignty against terrorist organisations, the UK, France and Canada stated that the war in Gaza has now gone too far.

"This escalation is wholly disproportionate. We will not stand by while the Benjamin Netanyahu Government pursues these egregious actions. If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response," they said.

"We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank. Israel must halt settlements, which are illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of both Israelis and Palestinians. We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions."

Additionally, the three countries voiced support for the ongoing efforts led by the United States, Qatar and Egypt to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

"These negotiations need to succeed, and we must all work towards the implementation of a two-state solution, which is the only way to bring long-lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve, and ensure long-term stability in the region," they said.

"We will continue to work with the Palestinian Authority, regional partners, Israel and the United States to finalise consensus on arrangements for Gaza's future, building on the Arab plan."
