Those in custody include 22-year-old Peter Mugane Kuria, Ian Macharia Wangare, 19, and Joseph Musila Mugo, 45, who was nabbed with a stolen washing machine.
In a separate arrest, detectives apprehended 28-year-old Maxwell Wafula Ongae after recovering a stash of assorted retail products believed to have been looted from a local shop.
Jackson Njagi, 29, was found with bottles of stolen whisky and a bundle of steel wire, while 26-year-old Brian Mbuvi was arrested at Downtown Guest House with an assortment of looted electronics and clothing. These included two desktop computers, a television set, three pairs of boots, several wristwatches, jackets, new jeans trousers and extension cables.
“All the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned at the Embu Law Courts on Monday, June 30,” the DCI said.
AK-47 rifle recovered
Meanwhile, officers from Kabete Police Station have recovered an AK-47 rifle that had been stolen from Dagoretti Police Post during the same day’s protests.
Detectives said the recovery followed a tip-off about a suspicious man carrying a bulging bag at the Gravity Bar in the Gahui area. Acting on the information and forensic intelligence, police launched a pursuit that led them to the suspect’s home in Njuki-Kirigu.
“Upon spotting the officers, the suspect fled and disappeared,” police said.
A search of his house, conducted in the presence of his mother, led to the discovery of the AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine and one round of 7.62mm special ammunition. DCI said the firearm was confirmed to have been stolen from the Dagoretti Police Post during the protest chaos.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large. Investigators say they are following critical leads to bring him to justice.
