Detectives in Gigiri are investigating an incident in which a police officer was shot and injured during an alleged altercation with two suspected drug peddlers last night.

The officer was shot while on patrol along Gigiri Road, Karura, approximately two kilometres south of the station.

A report filed at the station states that the officer was on patrol with a colleague when they encountered a suspect sitting under a shade, smoking bhang at the edge of a residence’s wall.

"As they approached him, the suspect started running away, defying their order to stop. When the police officers challenged him to halt, he responded by opening fire, shooting Police Constable Dennis Okenye in the right hip."

Preliminary investigations later identified the assailant as Police Constable Collins Nganga, who is attached to the residence of a high-ranking foreign official.

He was arrested and detained at Gigiri Police Station, and a Ceska pistol was confiscated from him.

The injured officer is receiving treatment at a city hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
