Government issues El Niño alert for three regions, starting tomorrow

The government has issued an El Niño alert for three regions, effective Sunday, December 10, lasting until at least December 15, 2023.

The government has issued an El Niño alert for three regions, effective Sunday, December 10, lasting until at least December 15, 2023. Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura, in a statement posted on X on Saturday, cautioned about storms and heavy rainfall expected in the regions of the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, and the South Rift Valley. He urged residents in the identified areas to remain vigilant and adhere to weather and flood alerts.

"Beginning Sunday, 10th December, isolated storms and intense rainfall are forecast for the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya & South Rift Valley," he stated. "Residents are forewarned to adhere to weather and flood alerts to avert more injuries and fatalities."

This comes after Dr. Mwaura noted on Friday that three more people had succumbed to the ongoing floods in the country, bringing the death toll of the El Nino rains since they began in October to 168. Three deaths were reported in Tharaka Nithi, Migori, and Nandi counties. He added that Northern Kenya is expected to remain sunny and dry, while flooding in Tana River could continue and lead to disruptions on the Garsen – Lamu road.

“The displacement remains the same, with 109,033 households, comprising approximately 545,515 individuals, currently displaced,” Dr. Mwaura said in a press release at that time.
