The murder of Inyanza was reported at the Airbase Police Post in Eastleigh vide Occurrence Book (OB) number 02/29/12/2024 by his father Zacharia Muhongo.
In an affidavit filed at the Makadara Law Courts, Constable Elphas Simiyu of Stahere DCI offices states that the deceased was walking with a woman when they were attacked by three men armed with knives. The suspects are said to have stabbed him on the left side of the chest and the back several times killing him instantly.
Simiyu said police officers from Airbase Police Post and DCI Starehe visited the scene and established that there was a quarrel between the deceased and the three suspects over a mobile phone.
The deceased was rushed to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Hospital. Upon assessment by doctors at the said facility, it was confirmed that the patient had passed on.
National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) assisted the police in tracing and arresting the suspects who were escorted to Ruaraka police station where they were booked vide OB No. 03/29/12.2024.
"Preliminary investigations have established that the respondents (Hassan, Omar and Suleiman) are members of an organised criminal group namely Superpower Boys that operates within Eastleigh whose activities are not limited to stealing, robberies, harming and maiming but even killing as in this case," stated detective Simiyu.
Simiyu said investigations into the circumstances and facts surrounding the murder incident and the involvement of the suspects are incomplete as several key issues have not been covered.
Pending issues in the investigations include recovering the murder weapon, interrogating and recording statements of the suspects and witnesses and conducting a postmortem to establish the cause of Inyanza's death.
Simiyu pleaded with the court to remand the suspects in custody, noting that they are flight risk since they don't have a known place of residence and that they are likely to escape owing to the seriousness of the case under investigation.
Simiyu said witnesses are yet to record statements and the three are likely to interfere with investigations since they are linked to an outlawed sect.
Senior Principal Magistrate Justus Kituku remanded the three in custody at the Ruaraka Police Station until January 13, 2025.
