The project is expected to provide irrigation for up to 10,000 hectares of agricultural land, enhancing local food production and supporting the livelihoods of farmers in the region.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali officially inaugurated the West Godey Irrigation Scheme on Friday in Godey, located in the Somali Region.

The project, developed at a cost of 3 billion Birr (approximately $23.3 million), features an extensive network of 145 kilometres of main and feeder canals.

It is expected to provide irrigation for up to 10,000 hectares of agricultural land, enhancing local food production and supporting the livelihoods of farmers in the region.

He expressed his satisfaction with the project's success on the Shabelle River, stating, “What was once barren land is now flourishing, showing great promise for the cultivation of sesame, wheat, corn, and various horticultural crops.”

Abiy emphasised that the development initiative has the potential to “unlock opportunities, enhance livelihoods, and transform communities.”

Abiy has made it a priority to boost Ethiopia's agricultural output to combat chronic food insecurity, which has historically resulted in devastating droughts and famines.

His focus is on reducing the nation’s reliance on food imports and steering Ethiopia towards self-sufficiency in food production.

Upon his arrival at Ugas Mirad Layli Airport in Godey, the Prime Minister was received by the President of the Somali Regional State, Mustafe Mohamed Omer, along with members of his administration.
