Three suspects arrested in connection with murder of IEBC official

The arrests followed a week-long manhunt and were carried out during coordinated operations within the coastal region by the DCI.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested three individuals suspected of involvement in the murder of Aisha Abubakar, an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official.

Aisha was killed on January 5, 2025, in her home, Utange Mkunguni, Kisauni Sub-County in Mombasa.

In a statement shared on their social media platforms, the DCI identified the suspects as Isa Omari, Brian Shikuku Mudari, and Bryan Templer Oyare. The arrests followed a week-long manhunt and were carried out during coordinated operations within the coastal region by the DCI.

According to the detectives, on January 5, the attackers reportedly gained access to Aisha's residence by cutting through the kitchen window grills. Armed with crude weapons, the intruders subdued her son before proceeding to stab Aisha multiple times. Despite her pleas, the attackers inflicted fatal injuries.

The assailants stole various items from the residence, including two Samsung phones, an iPad, a 65-inch television, a sound system, and ATM cards. They also obtained the PINs for the stolen cards during the incident.

"As she bled her life out, the cold-blooded attackers made away with several valuables," read part of the DCI statement.

Neighbours, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene in an attempt to save Aisha. She was transported to Premier Hospital in Nyali but was declared dead upon arrival.

"Frantic efforts to save her life by rushing her to Premier Hospital in Nyali were made, but she was declared dead on arrival," the DCI added.

Following the murder, the DCI's Kisauni office took charge of the investigation. They received support from the Operation Support Unit and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.

A forensic analysis was conducted, leading to the identification of the suspects. During the operation to apprehend the three individuals, detectives recovered one of the stolen phones and other critical evidence.

The DCI emphasized that investigations are still ongoing as authorities seek to uncover additional details about the case.

Aisha Abubakar's death has drawn attention from the local community and around the country, with calls for justice and increased efforts to ensure safety in the country.

The murder of a public official in such circumstances has raised concerns about security and the targeting of individuals in the line of public service.

The suspects remain in custody as detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to the murder.
