High-speed passenger rail service to transform travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai

The network is expected to link 11 cities across the UAE, with projections that over 36 million passengers will use the service annually by 2030.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are set for a travel revolution after Etihad Rail announced an ambitious plan to establish a high-speed passenger rail service linking the two cities on Thursday.

The new line which will be operated by Etihad Rail promises speeds of up to 350 kilometres per hour and will thus cut journey times between the two cities to just 30 minutes.

The line's route will connect key destinations and tourist hotspots, including Reem Island, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Zayed Airport, and locations in Dubai like Al Maktoum Airport and Jaddaf near Dubai Creek.

"This project reflects our vision to elevate national infrastructure and set new standards for mobility services," said Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects officer at Etihad Rail.

Among key officials who attended the unveiling include, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai.

While construction timelines have not yet been disclosed, tenders for contracts have been issued, and network designs have been approved.

Executive Director for high-speed at Etihad Rail, Sebastien Mangeant highlighted the appeal of the service for commuters and tourists alike.

"This isn't just about speed; it's about safety, convenience, and connectivity. The rail will provide a seamless experience, making travel faster and more enjoyable while supporting tourism and reducing road congestion," he said.

The new high-speed rail will complement the UAE's existing passenger and freight services, which are already operational. It will integrate with metro and bus networks, providing a comprehensive transport solution.

Designs for stations are underway, with plans to include business-class lounges, shops, and family-friendly amenities. The network is expected to link 11 cities across the UAE, with projections that over 36 million passengers will use the service annually by 2030.

The project, separate from the existing Etihad Rail diesel-powered network, is also expected to bring economic benefits. Officials estimate that it will contribute approximately Dh145 billion ($40 billion) to the UAE's GDP over the next 50 years.

Additionally, plans are underway for international connectivity, with a proposed line connecting Abu Dhabi to Oman.
