Grief in Kajiado as family mourns police officer killed in Haiti

Kaitwai had been serving in Mandera and Wajir before his deployment to Haiti.

Samuel Kaitwai had dreams like any young man dreams of building a home, raising his children, and securing a better future for his family.

But those dreams were shattered in a foreign land when the 28-year-old Kenyan police officer was killed in a gunfight with gangs in Haiti's Artibonite region.

His family in Naserian, Kajiado West, was unaware of the tragedy until uniformed officers arrived at their doorstep on Monday morning. The news turned their world upside down, leaving them in shock and grief.

"Nimesikia asubuhi that amefariki amekutana na maghaidi na wakamuua. Huyu kijana ni wangu. Amewacha watoto wawili wadogo sana na bibi yake ni mdogo sana," said his father, Kaetuai Lesaru Salaash, struggling to hold back tears while talking to Citizen TV.

Kaitwai had been serving in Mandera and Wajir before his deployment to Haiti.

His wife, Naomi Samuel, recalled their last exchanges. "Amekua busy hajakua akipiga simu lakini tulikua tunaongea kwa message, alikua anauliza watoto wakoaje," she said.

His loss was felt deeply by the family and the community.

"Tumepoteza kijana wetu ambaye wakati alipata kazi hakupotea kwa muguka la pombe, alishikilia familia," said family spokesperson Joseph Kimiti.

The young officer had started laying the foundation for a house, a symbol of his commitment to his family's future. Now, those stones remain untouched silent reminders of what could have been.

His father's plea is simple,"Naomba serikali aletwe hapa Kenya nipate nafasi ya kuona sura yake, kuona ni yeye."

Kaitwai was more than just a police officer; he was the sole breadwinner for his family.

"He is the only person who has a payslip with us today and so we look to him as a very big helper. As you can see, he had laid stones to build a house," said his brother, Amos Kaetuai.

His sacrifice leaves behind a grieving family, unfinished dreams, and a legacy of service that will not be forgotten.
