Ruto defends Shauri Moyo affordable housing amid opposition criticism, vows more development

President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to affordable housing by overseeing the Shauri Moyo 'A' Affordable Housing Project in Nairobi's Madaraka constituency.
Speaking on Monday during a site visit in Shauri Moyo, Ruto emphasized the project’s significance saying that the initiative would create employment opportunities for the youth and provide affordable housing to Kenyans.

The project, which was launched on January 27, 2023, aims to construct 3,248 housing units on a 12-acre site. Ruto said there are plans to build an additional 100,000 units nationwide over the next three years.
He also addressed critics opposing the project, asserting, "I know individuals are saying they will stop the affordable housing, but they won't succeed because development is a must in Nairobi."
The President also highlighted the project's scale, proposing an increase in building height to accommodate more residents due to land scarcity. He remarked, "We must change Nairobi to be the best city in the world; we will push this to 16 floors."
To improve the city's infrastructure, President Ruto announced the launch of the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, which includes constructing a 60-kilometre sewer system to enhance drainage and maintain clean rivers.
He also mentioned that the youth would be employed to ensure roads are maintained and garbage is managed effectively.
Addressing recent political developments, President Ruto referenced a memorandum of understanding with opposition leader Raila Odinga, noting that both parties' manifestos included affordable housing as a priority.
"When we join forces with Raila, we will ensure both teams work for the good of Kenyans," he said.
“By joining forces with Raila Odinga, we will ensure that the housing project benefits the common mwananchi.”
