Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes banned for doping violations

Brimin Misoi Kipkorir, a 35-year-old Kenyan road runner, has been banned for five years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after testing positive for Erythropoietin (EPO) and Furosemide.

“The AIU has banned Brimin Misoi Kipkorir (Kenya) for 5 years from 17 February 2025 for Presence/Use of Prohibited Substances (EPO, Furosemide). DQ results from 22 November 2024,” a post on the AIU official X page said.

Misoi provided a urine sample during an out-of-competition test on November 22, 2024, in Kaptagat, where Furosemide was initially detected. Further analysis revealed EPO, a performance-enhancing substance.

Despite being allowed to explain, Misoi admitted to the violations, and his results since the test date were annulled. The AIU reduced his six-year ban to five years for early admission.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian marathon runner, Alemtsehay Asefa, 26, has been banned for two years following multiple whereabouts failures. Asefa, who missed three testing windows within 12 months (February, July and October 2023), failed to provide valid reasons for the violations, admitting issues with her residential address registration.

“The AIU has banned Alemtsehay Asefa (Ethiopia) for 2 years from 18 March 2024 for Whereabouts Failures. DQ results from 24 October 2023,” AIU said.

As a result, her provisional suspension was confirmed, and all results since October 2023 have been disqualified, with medals, titles, and prize money forfeited. Asefa accepted the sanctions without contest.
