Mombasa traffic police gets new laser speed guns to boost road safety enforcement

Traffic officers are set to undergo a two-day training to ensure proper use and effectiveness of the equipment.

Traffic enforcement in Mombasa County has received a significant boost following the donation of eight state-of-the-art laser speed guns aimed at enhancing speed regulation and road safety.

The equipment was donated by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), an implementing partner of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), in response to enforcement gaps identified in the region.

Assistant Inspector General of Police  Administration, Dr Mutungi Musyoki, received the speed guns on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, noting that the new devices will strengthen efforts to reduce road crashes and enforce compliance.

The advanced laser guns have been distributed to all traffic bases in Mombasa. Traffic officers are set to undergo a two-day training to ensure proper use and effectiveness of the equipment.

“These are among the most advanced devices available globally. Their precision and reliability will play a crucial role in improving road safety,” said Artur Zawadzki, Senior Road Policing Officer at GRSP.

Mombasa County Executive Committee Member for Transport and Infrastructure, Dan Manyala, underscored the importance of speed control, stating that it directly impacts the risk and severity of road crashes.

“Equipping our officers with the right tools is essential in ensuring safer roads. This intervention supports our broader commitment to public safety,” said Manyala.

Police records show that 94 people lost their lives in road crashes in Mombasa in 2023. A separate survey conducted during the festive season revealed that only one per cent of drivers in the county were aware of the designated speed limits, raising concerns about awareness and enforcement.

The introduction of speed guns is expected to reinforce ongoing road safety measures and encourage greater compliance among motorists.
