Mining CS Hassan Joho urges police to stop arbitrary arrests of fishermen

Joho stressed that arresting fishermen should not be the routine way to enforce the law.

The Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Hassan Joho, has warned police against making arbitrary arrests of fishermen accused of breaching marine regulations.

At a conference in Homa Bay on May 28, 2025, Joho stressed that arresting fishermen should not be the routine way to enforce the law.

Instead, he encouraged the officers to seek help from the ministry for better solutions.

“Instead of regularly arresting them (the fishermen) for using illegal nets, come to my office to get recommended nets for them,” he stated.

Joho assured that the government is focused on backing the fishing sector with financial support, enhancing safety, and encouraging sustainable fishing activities.

Support to fishermen

“The government is actively working to provide necessary support to the fishing sector. We want our fishermen to operate in a safe environment while undertaking their normal activities,” he explained.

To boost safety on Lake Victoria, the government plans to invest Sh300 million in rescue boats that will improve emergency response efforts.

The conference, themed ‘Our Water Our Wealth,’ aims to strengthen the economic potential of the lake region, which is a crucial part of the local economy.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga emphasised the need to tackle agricultural challenges promptly as the sector remains the county’s backbone.

“To solve some of these challenges, our agricultural officials must be in touch with the farmers,” she said. Her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga, also called for increased safety support for fishermen operating in the lake.

The conference celebrated fishermen who practice sustainable fishing methods, rewarding their efforts to preserve the lake’s resources.

These discussions are part of preparations for the 62nd Madaraka Day National celebrations, scheduled for June 1, 2025, in Homa Bay, where further dialogue on blue economy issues will take place.
