Sophia Sitati appointed Acting Registrar of Political Parties following Anne Nderitu’s exit
Sophia Sitati, who previously held the position of Chief State Counsel, is expected to steer the ORPP in advancing democratic governance and political party oversight.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has appointed Sophia Sitati as the Acting Registrar, effective July 14, 2025, following the exit of Ann Nderitu, who now serves as a Commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Sophia, who previously held the position of Chief State Counsel, is expected to steer the ORPP in advancing democratic governance and political party oversight.

In a statement on Tuesday, ORPP confirmed that Sophia has been seconded from the Office of the Attorney General, the State Department for Justice and Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs.
“Sitati brings to ORPP a wealth of expertise and experience as a seasoned legal practitioner, having served in various portfolios in Government,” read the statement.
Sitati was formally briefed by Nderitu on July 15, 2025, at the ORPP headquarters in Nairobi, where she also met members of the management team and staff.
According to the ORPP, Nderitu's leadership during her seven-year tenure, laid the foundation for a stronger and more efficient office.
“She laid ORPP’s institutional foundation, such as human capital development, stakeholder engagements, legal and ICT reforms, capacity building of political parties officials and targeted Special Interest Groups,” ORPP said.
The office further highlighted that, under her leadership, the ORPP became a reference point for regional and international peers, with internal policy development across various functional areas being a key focus of her leadership.
“These initiatives have led to effective execution of the Office mandate and progressed democratic governance in Kenya,” the statement added.
Established in 2008, the ORPP is mandated to regulate the registration, funding, and oversight of political parties in the country. Sophia now takes charge of the institution alongside a committed team to ensure continuity and uphold the principles of democratic governance.
