DPP drops Sh32m graft case against former UoN Council Chair Amukowa Anangwe, three co-accused

Amukowa Anangwe, and his co-accused, Caren Omwenga, Abdullahi Ahmed, and Chief Operations Officer Daniel Brian Ouma were arrested and arraigned on May 17, 2025, afternoon on two charges of abuse of office and unlawful acquisition of public property.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has withdrawn a Sh32.4 million graft case against former University of Nairobi Council Chairperson Amukowa Anangwe and three other senior officials.

In a hearing before Anti-Corruption Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore, the DPP sought to terminate the matter under Section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

According to the DPP, the office did not wish to pursue the charges against Anangwe and his co-accused, Caren Omwenga, Abdullahi Ahmed, and Daniel Brian Ouma.

"We seek to have the case against Prof Anangwe and his co-accused persons withdrawn," said the DPP.

Following the withdrawal, Prof Anangwe, through his lawyer, requested the court to facilitate the release of his passport and a refund of the Sh1 million cash bail deposited earlier.

"With the withdrawal of charges, we urge the court to release the passport and direct that the cash bail be refunded without delay," said the lawyer.

Magistrate Okore, consequently, allowed the request by the DPP and ordered a refund of their cash bail.

The four were arrested and charged in May 2025 over allegations of abuse of office and unlawful acquisition of public property by the DPP and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

They, however, claimed the charges against them were a political witch-hunt and disregard for court orders.
