Pressure mounts on Israel to allow aid access in Gaza

On Friday morning, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called on Israel to comply with its obligations under International law, including allowing the United Nations and other humanitarian organisations to carry out their life-saving work safely and without hindrance.

Pressure continues to mount on Israeli forces to open aid access routes to Gaza, as the humanitarian situation in the occupied territory continues to deteriorate.

This is as countries continue to vouch for a two-state solution to the war in Gaza.

On Friday morning, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called on Israel to comply with its obligations under International law, including allowing the United Nations and other humanitarian organisations to carry out their life-saving work safely and without hindrance.

"Any proposals for the permanent, forced displacement of the Palestinian population must be abandoned. Australian condemns the terror and brutality of Hamas, and we reiterated our call for the immediate release of the remaining hostages," he said.

He, at the same time, reiterated Australia's recognition of the state of Israel and the state of Palestine, saying a two-state solution remains the goal of the international community as just and long-standing peace depends on it.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had reiterated that the country supports a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians.

"Canada condemns the Israeli government's failure to prevent the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian disaster in Gaza. Israel's control of aid distribution must be replaced by a comprehensive provision of humanitarian assistance led by international organisations. Many of these are holding significant Canadian-funded aid, which has been blocked from delivery to starving civilians. This denial of humanitarian aid is a violation of international law," he said.

The calls came amid reports that internal pressure mounts on the UK to follow France's cue in recognition of Palestine as a state.

Last evening, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the suffering and starvation unfolding in Gaza is unspeakable and indefensible, having reached new depths that amount to a "humanitarian catastrophe."

"I will hold an emergency meeting with E3 leaders tomorrow, where we will discuss what we can do urgently to stop the killing and get people food they desperately need while pulling together all the steps necessary to build lasting peace. We all agree on the pressing need for Israel to change course and allow the aid that is desperately needed to enter Gaza without delay," he said.
