Turkana County launches project to train 1,250 youth as community digital champions

According to the county government, applicants seeking to become community digital champions must be residents of the community, active smartphone users, and hold at least a KCSE certificate.

Turkana County has taken a significant step towards digital empowerment with the launch of the Digitally Enabled Gender and Social Inclusion (DAGESI) project, starting with a mobilisation and awareness workshop for vocational college managers.

The initiative aims to equip marginalised youth aged 18–35 with foundational digital skills to drive transformation at the grassroots level.

The DAGESI training, held in Lodwar, brought together managers from eight vocational colleges, preparing them to serve as master trainers for the Community Digital Champions (CDCs) programme.

According to the county government, applicants seeking to become CDCs must be residents of the community, active smartphone users, and hold at least a KCSE certificate.

The program aims to train 1,250 CDCs, with the top 125 performers set to receive scholarships for advanced digital training.

Digital tools for self-reliance

During the workshop, County Executive for Education, Sports, and Social Protection, Leah Audan, underscored the importance of embracing digital tools for self-reliance.

"We want to shift from reliance to resilience, and embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital literacy, and grassroots empowerment is our way forward," she said.

LOKADO Executive Director Augustine Kai highlighted the need for collaboration to ensure no youth is left behind.

County Director of TVET, Stephen Eregae, announced that the department was ready to roll out the project's three-month pilot phase, adding that its success would be critical for full implementation over the next three years.

Once recruited, CDCs will receive a stipend to train local residents on key digital skills, including smartphone use, accessing e-Citizen services, and making online bill payments.
