25 people have died in a tragic bus accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega road, according to the Ministry of Health.

The bus, carrying 61 members of the Sigoti Clan from Nyakach, overturned near the Coptic roundabout after reportedly hitting an object. 32 survivors are currently receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).

Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, announced an urgent blood donation drive scheduled for Saturday, August 9, at Leresian Park within JOOTRH, starting at 9:00 AM.

“This blood drive is crucial to ensure we have sufficient supplies to support the survivors who are undergoing treatment in our Orthopaedic Trauma Ward,” Dr. Oluga said.

The hospital had earlier confirmed it received 19 bodies from the crash site, while 4 additional victims, including 3 unidentified adult males and 1 child, succumbed to their injuries upon arrival.

Thirty-two survivors are receiving treatment in the hospital’s Orthopaedic Trauma Ward.

The hospital has set up a help desk next to the Emergency and Accident Unit to provide psycho-social support and assist family members seeking information about their loved ones. The hospital remains on high alert to manage any further emergency needs.

The Ministry of Health urged all road users to exercise caution, emphasising that road safety is crucial to preventing such tragedies.
