IEBC clears candidates, opens campaigns for November by-elections

Campaigns are set to run from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm daily and will officially conclude on Monday, November 24, 48 hours before the polling day.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared candidates to contest the November 27 by-elections across 24 constituencies, following the completion of the registration process.
IEBC has announced a 10-day period for addressing disputes that may have arisen during nominations, ensuring all candidates meet legal requirements before campaigns gather full momentum.

In its statement on Thursday, the commission emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and adhering to electoral rules during the campaign period. “Candidates are urged to strictly adhere to the code of conduct during the electioneering period,” IEBC said on X.
Each nominee was vetted to confirm compliance with the qualifications and disqualifications for the respective positions. Once cleared by the Returning Officers, candidates were permitted to start their campaigns immediately.

Chairperson Erastus Ethekon confirmed that IEBC has secured the necessary financial support from the National Treasury to conduct the by-elections smoothly.
“We would like to assure the country and citizens that all preparations are in top gear, and the resources we needed to conduct successful by-elections are now available to us,” he said.
This comes after concerns over budget constraints that had threatened the electoral timeline. Ethekon said discussions with Treasury officials resolved these challenges, allowing the commission to proceed as planned.
"Where there were shortages, we have had candid and fruitful discussions with our national treasury, who have since then unlocked that, and therefore there is no reason whatsoever why we should not have by-elections as planned," he affirmed.
The commission has also engaged political stakeholders through the Political Parties Liaison Committee and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties to ensure transparency and readiness.
“These discussions covered our preparedness not only for the by-elections but also for the 2027 general elections and ongoing voter registration exercises,” Ethekon added.
He reiterated that IEBC remains committed to conducting elections that are credible, timely, and free from irregularities.
