Hundreds of parents from Maikona Primary school in Marsabit sub-County took to the streets to protest against Hijab ban imposed by the schools' administration.
The Muslim community led by Activist Galgalo Abduba noted the ban on the islamic headscarves was against the right to religious freedom and education.
“Banning Hijab will have a great impact on Muslim girls’ right to education, the school has no power to deny any student any religious attire,”, Galgalo noted.
Abduba accused the school of violating the student's rights. He asked the school to stop discriminating against Muslims and allow girls to wear hijabs.
Parents accused the school of discrimination against Muslim students and asked the government to intervene.
"This protest is to register our displeasure and condemnation of the draconian and repressive school administration by banning wearing of hijab,” said Adan dalacha, one of the parents at Maikona Primary School.
Covering the head by Muslim women is a sign of religious belief and modesty.
