Government allocates Sh1.7bn to boost blue economy in coastal counties

The funds will be distributed among 612 groups within these counties, benefiting over 19,000 individuals working in the blue economy sector.

The government has allocated Sh1.7 billion in grants to five coastal counties—Mombasa, Tana River, Kwale, Lamu, and Kilifi—to boost Kenya's blue economy.

The funds will be distributed among 612 groups within these counties, benefiting over 19,000 individuals working in the blue economy sector. This financial support aims to enhance their livelihoods and transform their economic status.

Speaking during the issuance of the grants to Kenya Marine Fisheries on Friday in Mombasa, President William Ruto said the grant affirms his bottom-up agenda of boosting low-income earners.

"Fishing is a key component of our Bottom-Up Economic Development Agenda. We are investing in our blue economy to unlock its huge potential," Ruto said.

Ruto added that the cash will greatly help reduce unemployment rates in the region and raise more revenue for the government.

"This deliberate plan will generate more than Sh120 billion a year and create employment for thousands of our youth," stated Ruto.

The head of state revealed plans for the construction of five fish landing sites across the five counties. The project will cost a tune of Sh1.2 billion. Some of the proposed sites are Mwaepe in Ukunda, Kidongo in Mombasa, Kipini in Kilifi, and Mkoe in Lamu.

The president handed over the sites, and development is slated to begin in the next eight months.

"The fish landing sites will help fishermen carry out their work effectively. There will be minimal wastage and an increase in income since fish will be kept in refrigerators," he said.

Ruto revealed his government will be constructing three fish markets in Likoni, Malindi, and Kibuyuni in Kwale to ensure a ready market for fish. The fish marketing infrastructure will boost food security in the country.

The government has also planned to construct a Sh1.4 billion National Mariculture Resource and Training Center in Shimoni to equip learners and fishermen with the relevant skills and training required in the blue economy.

The government has also set aside Sh 600 million to buy 25 boats for deep-sea fishing. The boats will be distributed within the counties.
